Bundoora Primary school teaches Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Auslan is the language of the Deaf community in Australia. We have a unique approach, teaching Auslan through our Performing and Visual Arts programs. This engages students, allowing them to learn a language easily and in an enjoyable way.
Auslan is a visual-gestural language. Signs combine with facial expressions to show different emotions and meanings of words. This short video shows how our children have embraced this language.
Students use visual cues in Performing and Visual Arts to learn and understand the Auslan language quickly. Most of our staff have some Auslan skills. This means our students are able to practice and use their skills throughout the school. Small parent seminars are occasionally run so parents can learn basic skills to practice at home with their children.
